What is a "beta" version ?
A beta version, as opposed to a final version, is software that is undergoing its final stages in testing. We release beta versions to our customers so that the final set of bugs can be found and eliminated from WinRAR.
It is impossible to find all software bugs in a lab environment, because of the various different hardware and software setups. One person can not find all the bugs in a program. It takes many people in real-life situations, using the program for a long time, to find a bug.
We extensively test a beta version before issuing it (alpha phase).
That does not mean that the version is perfect. One or more of the changes may not work as intended. A change may be awkward, unreliable and need re-doing or a change may have an adverse effect on some other operation or function. Thats why it needs testing.
WinRAR betas are numbered, this means first beta is beta 1, second beta is beta 2 and so on. Every beta version contains a "/whats new" text with fixed bugs and changes.

After finding and fixing a number of bugs in a beta version, we release a new beta with a new beta version number. Usually 5 - 7 beta versions are released before WinRAR gets a final version. So a beta number higher than 5 is very near to the final version.
Note, while beta testing we dont add new features to WinRAR.
After a final release, we add new features to alpha versions, which are not released outside of our software company. They are only used inside of our company for debugging and further development purposes. After adding all new features and changes to an alpha version and after extensive testing
we release the first new beta version.

Can I install WinRAR in silent mode?
If you have a rollout of PC's for a company and you want to install WinRAR quickly you can use the silent mode install.
Just use the "/s" switch during install and WinRAR will be installed with all default settings.
What are the system requirements for WinRAR
The system requerements of WinRAR are:
- Intel Pentium (or compatible)
- Win95, 98, Me, NT 4.0, 2000, XP
- 64MB of RAM
- 3MB of available hard disk space
Can WinRAR run on Windows 2003
A number of users are running the current WinRAR version on Windows Server 2003 and there havent been any issues reported.
Which operating systems do WinRAR/RAR support
WinRAR works with the following versions of Windows:
- 95
- 98
- NT
- ME
- 2000
- XP
RAR (Shareware command line tool) is available for all Windows 32Bit versions, Mac OS X, DOS, OS/2, Linux and FreeBSD Unix
How do I upgrade my old WinRAR version
Firstly make sure WInRAR is closed and then you need to download the latest version of WinRAR.
Now install the new version and you are away. There is no need to uninstall the previous version first which will save you time and effort.
Write error - only NTFS file system supports files larger than 4 GB
This error happens when you try to uncompress a file which is larger than 4 GB to a FAT/FAT32 partition. Only NTFS partitions can support files larger than this size.
I get an error about a missing volume
You will get this message if you are mssing part of the archive. You might find you have 5 spanning files but the archive required 6. Check with your source of the files and confirm you have all required parts.
How much do upgrades to WinRAR cost
Nothing!. If you have purchased a WinRAR license then all future updates are free. Just download the latest release and install over the current version and your away.
What is the dictionary size
The dictionary size is used by the compression algorithm and is defaulted to 4096Kb.
If your computer has 64Mb memory ormore then leave it on this option otherwsie you might want to decrease the amount.
How can I provide authenticity on my archives
There is a feature on the "archive name and parameters" dialog box at time of creation.
By selecting the option " Put authenticity verification" you will be including the creator, last update date and time and archive name.
The program needs to be registered to use this feature.
Can I protect my RAR files from modification
Yes you can protect them by selecting the option "lock archive" on the "general" tab within the "archive name and parameters" dialog box.
This will stop any modifcations from occuring on the new archive.

Associate WinRAR with different extensions
The great feature about WinRAR is its ability to open file types that are widely used such as rar, zip, cab, iso, arj, lzh, ace, tar, gzip
If you want to associate WinRAR to handles these types from windows explorer then you need to do the following.
Open WinRAR and select the "Options" menu.
Choose "Settings".
Select the "integration" tab and select the different formats you would like handled.
How do I use WinRAR to compress files
There are two ways to compress files.
1). Open WinRAR and select the "Add" button. Name the archive something descriptive and then click on the "Files" tab. Here you can select the files you want in the archive by clicking the "append" button and selecting your files. Click "OK" to generate the archive.
2). In Windows Explorer find the files you want and highlight them. Right mouse click on one of the selected files and choose "add to filename.rar" or "add to archive" depending on whether you want more options. The archive should have been created in the current folder.
Can I use WinRAR to uncompress "Zip" files
WinRAR handles "zip" files and can extract the files. WinRAR has gained popularity due to its ability open many different formats.
What are ".r??" files
The file extensions ".r??" are from a multiple archive which has spanned due to a size setting when creating the archive. They start at ".rar" and then to ".r00" and continue numerically up to ".r99"
The creator of the archive may have asked to split the volume into sizes of 1.44mb to fit on a floppy disk each.
To open the archive you will need to open up the first file ".rar" and then choose to extract the file to a destination folder. The extraction should find the needed spanning files and you should find the finished file in the location you specified when completed.
Why compress files
The best way to send many files is in a single file like a "RAR". WinRAR can take many files and compress them into one single file known as an archive. This archive can have a ".rar" , ".zip" or ".exe" extension depending on your preference.
Email size restrictions have limited people from sending large files around. This helps the mail server performance by not handling excessive files. WinRAR can reduce file sizes to help bring them under some size restrictions and can create spanning archives to allow you to send these files as separate emails. When the recipent receives them they can recreate the single archive and presto the original large file is available to them. Try it today!
How can I create a self extracting file
When you add files to your archive you will receive a dialog box "archive name and parameters". You can select the option "create SFX archive" and the name of the archive will end with a ".exe"
This file can now be created and doesn't require WinRAR to uncompress it. It's great for sending to people who don't have the software loaded or a quick way to uncompress files when you need them.
